Martin Savard is passionate about Rakugo.
What is Rakugo?
Rakugo is a form of traditional Japanese comedy theater. It is characterized by a narrator (the Rakugoka) who tells a humorous story using only a fan and a small cushion as props, seated on a tatami in front of an audience seated in a circle.
The story told by the Rakugoka is often a short story, based on a main character who finds himself in an absurd or comical situation. Stories usually have an unexpected ending that makes the audience laugh.
Although Rakugo is traditionally told in Japanese, it has also been adapted into other languages, including English and French. It is also a wish of Martin Savard to interpret the tales and legends of Quebec in the Japanese way.

Come meet him at his panel on the art of Kamishibai, or traveling paper theater.

It is a precursor of manga and anime. We will see the first modern superhero who flies in tights (8 years before Superman who arrived in 1938). DDeveloped at a time when television did not exist, Kamishibai has nevertheless found its niche in our modern world and is practiced on all continents.

Qu’est-ce que le Rakugo?
Le Rakugo est une forme de théâtre comique japonais traditionnel. Il se caractérise par un narrateur (le Rakugoka) qui raconte une histoire humoristique en utilisant seulement un éventail et un petit coussin comme accessoires, assis sur un tatami devant un public assis en cercle.
L’histoire racontée par le Rakugoka est souvent une histoire courte, basée sur un personnage principal qui se retrouve dans une situation absurde ou comique. Les histoires ont généralement une fin inattendue qui fait rire le public.
Bien que le Rakugo soit traditionnellement raconté en japonais, il a également été adapté dans d’autres langues, notamment en anglais et en français. C’est d’ailleurs un souhait de Martin Savard que d’interprété à la japonaise les contes et légendes du Québec.
Venez le rencontrer à son panel sur l’art du Kamishibai, ou théâtre ambulant de papier. C’est un précurseur du manga et des animés. On y verra le premier super-héros moderne qui vole en collants (8 ans avant Superman qui arrive en 1938). Développé à une époque où la télévision n’existait pas, le Kamishibai a néanmoins trouvé sa niche dans notre monde moderne et est pratiqué sur tous les continents.

Her impressive portfolio also includes a wide range of commercials, dubbing, theatre, and audiobooks. You might recognize her from her role as DeEtta Calvert on NBC’s Grimm or appearances on TNT’s Leverage, Brat TV’s Chicken Girls, and Investigation Discovery’s Betrayed and Stranger Among Us. 📺🎭
